I am a firm believer of the idea that you control your own destiny. You can get whatever it is that you want out of your life just by doing a few things. I have had times in my life where I felt nothing was going my way, felt stuck or couldn’t see the end of a dark tunnel but I have also had times in my life where I have had everything I could have wanted at that time and it wasn’t by luck. Here are a few of tips on how to get what you want out of life that I have pulled away from my personal experiences:

1. Set goals.

If you don’t know what it is that you want then how can you ever make it happen? I think the idea of setting a goal is exaggerated. Often times we believe our goals should be elaborate and lifelong, but this is not the case. Yes, it is important to set goals for the long term, but what are you going to do reach those goals? Start by making smaller goals…or steps to get to your ultimate goal. For example, if you want to travel start by setting a smaller goal like saving x amount of money towards your travels. After you achieve this goal, make your next goal, the next step to achieving the larger goal. There doesn’t even need to be a larger goal. I have set small goals such as being able to put my palms flat on the floor in my forward fold. Smaller goals like these help us to appreciate the little things in life, leading us to living a happy and fulfilled life. Without goals, it is impossible to get what you want out of your life.

2. Make it happen.

This is the most important tip to living the life you want to live. I promise you, if you sit around waiting for something to happen, it will never happen. You need to play an active role in your own life. There is a saying “Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today.” If you want something, do what it takes to get it. Don’t sit around and wait. Let’s take the example of traveling again. Let’s say you want to travel but you know you don’t make enough right now to afford it, maybe you can start looking for other ways to earn some extra money, watch what you spend your extra money on and cut back on spending, etc. A better example, you are unhappy with your current job and want to find another. You need to be actively looking for another job in order to find one. This may seem like common sense, but often times we don’t apply it to our lives.

3. Don’t let obstacles get in your way.

That’s all they are, obstacles. They are not the end of the road. If something gets in the way of your goal, start by reassessing that goal. Is it still what you want? If so, what is your next step to get there? What goal do you have to set to make it to this next step? If this is no longer your goal, set a new one. And continue to play an active role in reaching that goal. If we truly let obstacles get in our way, we will never get what it is that we want in our lives.

You are the creator of your own destiny. Set goals, make it happen, don’t let anything get in your way.
